Most growers and consumers are familiar with cantaloupes. Cantaloupes turn beige and slip from the vine when ripe and have an orange, sweet flesh. Cantaloupes are typically separated into two categories, eastern and western. Eastern types are sutured, large and generally sweeter than western types. Acreage of eastern cantaloupes has increased over 5 times in the last 5 years, with Athena type being the primary variety. Originally introduced in 1995, Athena cantaloupes quickly gained popularity with Eastern cantaloupe growers, shippers, and retail buyers because of its strong field performance, outstanding flavor, and shelf life. By 1997 this variety type accounted for 80 to 90 percent of all Eastern cantaloupes grown in the Southeast and Midwest. Athena's having a longer shelf life enable it to be shipped to more distant markets. Its unique combination of very firm, flavorful flesh, and shelf life are the reason major retailers ask for this type melon. North Carolina Cantaloupe
