North Carolina Strawberries

North Carolina StrawberriesNorth Carolina ranks fourth in the nation in strawberry production with approximately 1,800 acres of strawberries harvested each year.

Most of the North Carolina strawberries are offered "direct from the farm" to the consumer. Pick-your-own farms are conveniently located across the state and offer extended hours of operation to better serve the public. If you are not interested in picking your own strawberries, most locations offer picked berries. Another alternative is local and regional farmers' markets. These wonderful springtime treats are available from mid-April through the second week of June.

Strawberries are high in Vitamin C and A, and supply 8% of the RDA for Iron. There are only 60 calories in a cup of fresh berries and zero grams of fat.

Approximately 10% of the crop is produced for the wholesale market. North Carolina strawberry shippers supply local grocery stores, restaurants, chain stores, as well as, local and regional farmers markets.

The Horticultural Crops section promotes the strawberry crop through promotional events such as Strawberry Days at the state operated farmers markets.
